Understanding Your Medicare Options
What is Medicare Supplement (Medigap)?
Medicare Supplement Insurance, also known as Medigap, is health insurance sold by private insurance companies like Mutual of Omaha, Humana, and Aetna. These plans are designed to fill in the "gaps" in Original Medicare Parts A and B coverage.
Medicare supplement plans are standardized by the government, meaning that each plan letter (A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, and N) provides the same basic benefits regardless of which insurance company sells it. The main difference between companies is the price and customer service.
No Provider Networks
Medigap plans have no provider networks. You can see any doctor or specialist that accepts Medicare patients anywhere in the United States.
What is Medicare Advantage (Part C)?
Medicare Advantage plans are an alternative way to get your Medicare benefits. These plans are operated by private insurance companies that are authorized by Medicare. Instead of Original Medicare paying your healthcare bills, the Medicare Advantage plan does.
Most Medicare Advantage plans include prescription drug coverage (Part D) and may offer extra benefits like dental, vision, and hearing coverage. However, these plans typically have networks of doctors and hospitals you must use, and the plans can change their benefits and costs each year.
5-Star Rating System
Medicare Advantage plans are rated on a 5-star scale based on quality and performance. Higher-rated plans typically offer better customer service, care coordination, and health outcomes.
Doctor Acceptance
Medicare Advantage plans use provider networks. You must check if your doctors and hospitals are in-network before enrolling. Out-of-network care may cost significantly more or not be covered at all.
What is Medicare Part D?
Medicare Part D is prescription drug coverage that helps cover the cost of prescription medications. Anyone who is eligible for Medicare Part A or enrolled in Part B can join a Medicare Part D plan. Part D can be purchased as a standalone plan to complement Original Medicare and a Medicare Supplement, or it can be included as part of a Medicare Advantage plan.
