Life & Supplemental Insurance
A good health plan pays the hospital. It does not pay your mortgage, your deductible, or the months you are not working. These are the policies that do.
Think of it as a sandwich
Your major medical plan, whether that is Medicare, a plan tied to Medicare, or a marketplace plan, is the meat. It is the part that sustains you through most claims, and you should not go without it.
But a sandwich is not finished with just meat. Cancer, heart attack and stroke coverage, hospital indemnity, and life insurance are the rest of it. Each one closes a specific gap the big plan leaves open.
You build it to your appetite. Some people need two layers, some need five. The point of sitting down with an agent is working out which gaps are actually yours.

Coverage That Pays You, Not the Provider
The difference that matters: these policies put cash in your hands, which means the money is not tied to a network.
Pays a lump sum on diagnosis. Treatment for a serious diagnosis can run for years, so this is built to carry you through more than one deductible cycle.
Instead of paying a few thousand dollars toward your plan, you get paid. Some policies also pay on emergency room or observation visits that never become an admission.
Protects the people who depend on your income. Many policies also include living benefits, paying part of the benefit early after a qualifying serious diagnosis.
Why I push on this
My job is not really selling insurance. It is keeping people out of bankruptcy, because medical debt is a leading cause of it in this country. Every one of these policies exists because someone got a diagnosis and then got a bill.
Networks are the part people underestimate. Some of the best hospitals in the country do not contract with every plan, and a diagnosis is a bad time to find that out. A cash benefit is not tied to a network, which is exactly why it is worth having before you need it.
The worst call I can get is someone asking what can be done about a diagnosis, and having to say that we talked about this and it was turned down. I would rather have the conversation now, while it is still cheap. More on the gaps that cause bankruptcy.
